Singer/Songwriter Gregory Alan Isakov began his extensive national headlining tour this January 15′ containing many noteworthy venues, with one of those stops being at Minneapolis’ own Varsity Theater coming up on Friday January 16th.  Born in Johannesburg, South Africa but now residing in Colorado, Isakov is touring in support of his album The Weatherman released in 2013 which debuted at #1 on iTunes’ Singer/Songwriter chart, #5 on Billboard’s Folk chart, and #1 on Billboard’s Mountain and Pacific Heatseekers charts.

Isakov has performed in collaboration with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and has toured alongside musicians such as Iron & Wine, Josh Ritter, Ani DiFranco, Brandi Carlile, The Lumineers and Blind Pilot.  He has been described as “strong, subtle, a lyrical genius,” often writing songs about the beauty of things in everyday life.  I have been a personal fan of Isakov for many years now, with his song “Saint Valentine” (listen here) first grabbing my attention.  His music reminds me of a simpler time in the past, without the busyness and technology of today’s life, where things like family, relationships, and simple joys were never taken for granted.  Isakov created his record, and in a sense lives this way himself.   The Weatherman was recorded mostly in solitude outside the quiet mountain town of Nederland, Colorado over the course of a year and a half, and aside from music Isakov spends much of his time in his garden living on a farm in CO.
